Compositional Listening: Musical Arrangement in the 19th and 20th Centuries

Dr. William Lockhart

This project attempts to do two things. First, it begins to write the history of the practice of arrangement, exploring it not only as an important heuristic tool for the circulation of music in the nineteenth century, but also as compositional technique in the twentieth; second, it considers the burgeoning musicological interest in the history of listening and suggests that in some cases, musical arrangements can offer material evidence for historical listening practices.
